Understanding Closet Types
Closets are one of the key spaces or elements that reflects the personality of the owner/client right from the finishes right into the contents of it.
Contents may vary from entirely clothes to a combination of clothes, bags and shoes. With recent innovations, closet accesssories have made storage organization a delight and reach a convenience.
Before deciding what type of closet you want to have, there are some things that you have to consider to be able to address your storage needs and still reflect your style.
Space
We all dreamed of walking in a room full of clothes, accessories and shoes. It somehow has a feeling of grandeur that anyone would love to drench in. However, not everyone has the space to accommodate such a huge storage. To make sure that the wardrobe that you want fits the space that’s available for it, measure the floor to ceiling height, distance from wall to wall, and the distance between where the wardrobe will be and other items of furniture in your room. If a walk-in closet is possible, make sure to provide a clearance space for doors.
Type
As you have the measurements, you can now decide what type of wardrobe to go for—whether a walk-in closet, a reach-in closet, or a wardrobe. A wardrobe can either be premade or custom built. The latter will not be portable and will take longer to design but it will give you the freedom to customize the size, materials, colors, finishes, and storage accessories according to your preferences.
WALK-IN CLOSET - large or small, a walk-in closet is a room on its own usually custom designed to provide space saving options equipped with multiple hanging areas, adjustable shelving, pullout accessories, drawers, baskets, and hampers. The center isle is usually equipped with a center island, bench seating area or deep drawers.
REACH-IN CLOSET - a little smaller than a walk-in closet with just a depth of the cabinet embedded on the wall, it is also equipped but with a limited hanging area, adjustable shelving, pullout accessories, drawers, baskets and hampers (depending on the length of the wall.
WARDROBE - is a freestanding or built-in closet with hanging areas, adjustable shelves, drawers, and pullout accessories tailored to fit and provided the needed requirements within the limited space.
Storage
Decide on the kind of storage you need for your clothing collection. You should know which items you have the most to be able to appropriately organize your wardrobe. If you have a lot of formal wear or dresses, you should provide sufficient hanging space. If you have a lot of accessories, you should provide multiple drawers. In a walk-in closet, if you have plenty of shoes and bags to display, make sure you also provide sufficient space for them. Sometimes, a couple may share a wardrobe. If this is a case, make sure to address the specific needs of the man and the woman for they may differ in their storage needs.
Style
If the wardrobe is just an addition to the bedroom, make sure it matches the existing style of the bedroom so that it wouldn’t feel out of place. Whether custom built or premade, you have a lot of option to choose from be it the kind of doors of the wardrobe—sliding, swing, bifold, or having no doors at all—and the kind of color/finish of the wardrobe. You may opt for the traditionally styled wardrobes in wood grain finish or the clean, sleek all-white Scandinavian style wardrobes. You may also have mirrors on the doors of the wardrobes.
